Carry Tricks for Solving Cryptarithms Faster
Carries are among the strongest clues in addition cryptarithms because they connect neighboring columns.
Write the hidden carry
Do not keep carries only in your head. Mark each boundary with c = 0 or 1. The next column becomes a precise equation instead of a vague relationship.
Use the result digit
If A + B ends in C, then A + B is either C or C + 10. If A and B are both large, a carry becomes likely; if their maximum possible sum is below 10, it is impossible.
A repeated result can expose the carry
Suppose a column has X + Y + c = X. Then Y + c must be 0 or 10. With distinct digits, this can be extremely restrictive.
Start where the information is strongest
The rightmost column is a natural start, but the best column is sometimes one with repeated letters, a known carry, or a very constrained leading digit. Scan the whole puzzle first.
