Cryptarithm guide
What Is a Cryptarithm?
A cryptarithm is an arithmetic puzzle where letters or symbols stand for digits. In an alphametic, the letters form words and each letter consistently represents the same digit.
Basic rules
- Each distinct letter represents one digit from 0 to 9.
- The same letter always represents the same digit.
- Different letters normally represent different digits.
- A leading letter cannot be zero.
- The arithmetic equation must be correct.
Classic example
One of the best-known alphametic puzzles is SEND + MORE = MONEY. The challenge is to assign digits to letters so the addition becomes numerically correct.
Why people enjoy cryptarithms
They combine arithmetic with logical deduction. Solvers reason about carries, impossible digit combinations and repeated symbols instead of relying on trial and error alone.
